Food, home repair, health screens, school supplies and adult classes across the colonias of the Rio Grande Valley — carried out with volunteers, teams and groups.
How our programs fit together
Poverty does not arrive one problem at a time, so we do not answer it one program at a time. A family that needs groceries this week is often living under a roof that leaks and has not seen a doctor in years. Everything below runs through the same network of Rio Grande Valley churches, so a family only has to build trust once. Short-term mission teams supply the labor and the energy; the local congregation stays.
Food distribution
Groceries reach colonia families through the churches they already know, close enough to reach on foot when there is no car and no bus route.
Food is the front door of everything we do. Many colonias sit miles from a grocery store, outside city limits and off any transit line, so a pantry twenty minutes away by car may as well not exist. Hearts 4Kids works with a network of Rio Grande Valley churches that host distributions in their own parking lots and fellowship halls. Congregations supply the volunteers and the trust; we help supply the food, the logistics and the mission teams who pack and carry it. During the 2020 COVID-19 shutdown that same network moved food to roughly 6,000 people a week with more than 750 volunteers, and the relationships built then still carry the ordinary weeks now.

- Drive-through and walk-up lines both served, so a family without a vehicle is never turned away

- Pantry sites started with us, such as the 2016 pantry at Iglesia Vino Nuevo in San Carlos, keep operating between mission trips
Home construction & repair
Painting, roofing, sheetrock, siding and small builds — the repairs that make a house dry, safe and something a family can be proud of.
Colonia housing is often self-built over years as money allowed, which means a home can be standing but not finished: exposed studs, a leaking roof, no siding, a floor that floods. Short-term mission teams are ideally suited to this work. A group of ten with a week and a plan can reroof a house, close in a room, or paint a block of homes. Our staff scope the projects with local pastors ahead of time, buy the materials in the Valley and supervise on site, so teams arrive to a job that is ready to start and families are not left with a half-finished house when the van pulls away.

- Repairs are scoped and finished rather than started and abandoned between teams

Health screens & referrals
Free community health screens with visiting medical volunteers, plus the referral that gets someone into a Valley clinic before a problem becomes an emergency.
The Rio Grande Valley has some of the highest rates of uninsurance and diabetes in the country, and for a colonia family the barrier is rarely the diagnosis — it is the clinic hours, the drive and the cost of the first visit. When medical volunteers travel with a mission team, we set up screens at partner churches: blood pressure, glucose, vision, general wellness checks and basic first aid, in Spanish. Anything that needs more than a screen gets a warm handoff to a local clinic or county program, and the host church follows up, because a referral no one checks on is not care.

Children & education support
Backpacks, school supplies and shoes at the start of the year, and kids' clubs, Vacation Bible Schools and block parties through it.
A backpack, a set of notebooks and a pair of shoes can equal a week of household income at exactly the moment school starts, and children notice who came unprepared. Each year our teams and donors supply children in the colonias with what they need for the first day, distributed through their own neighborhood church rather than a distant office. Alongside the supplies, mission teams run Vacation Bible Schools, kids' clubs and neighborhood block parties — free, safe, loud, and often the only organized activity available to children in a colonia during the summer.

ESL & vocational training
English classes and hands-on vocational training for parents at our partner community centers — the skills that turn short-term help into steady income.
Relief work keeps a family standing; skills let them move. Five of our partner congregations opened their buildings mid-week as community centers, and those rooms host English-as-a-second-language classes and practical vocational training for adults. English opens jobs, school meetings and medical appointments that were previously closed; trade skills learned on our construction projects have given volunteers from the colonias paid work of their own. These centers also act as the bridge between colonia residents and the government and nonprofit agencies that serve the Valley but rarely reach that far out.

Short-term mission teams
Every program on this page depends on people who give a week. Churches, youth groups, college and medical teams come to the Rio Grande Valley, stay near the communities they serve and work under the direction of local pastors. We plan the projects, secure the materials, arrange the sites and build the schedule before you arrive.
Build & repair teams
Painting, roofing, sheetrock, siding and flooring on colonia homes, with tasks for every skill level from first-time youth to experienced tradespeople.
Kids & outreach teams
Vacation Bible Schools, kids' clubs, block parties, sports and school-supply distributions hosted at partner churches through the summer.
Medical & ESL teams
Licensed medical volunteers run community health screens; teachers and bilingual volunteers support ESL and vocational classes for adults.
