Field update

The real cost of a sick child isn't the diagnosis

It is the bus fare, the prescription and the lost day of wages. Our medical program closes those gaps and follows up so treatment gets finished.

Families here rarely delay care because they doubt the doctor. They delay because getting to the clinic costs bus fare, the prescription costs money at the pharmacy, and the trip costs a day of wages the household cannot spare.

Hearts 4Kids covers those gaps. We arrange appointments, pay for the visit and the medicine, and cover travel. When a child needs a specialist in a larger city, staff help the family navigate the referral rather than leaving them with a piece of paper and no plan.

Follow-up is the part that gets skipped

A course of treatment that stops halfway is close to no treatment at all. Our staff keep notes on every child with an ongoing or recurring condition and follow up directly with the family — a reminder, a second visit, another round of medicine if it is needed.

The change we most want to see is families bringing children in earlier, before an infection or a dental problem becomes the reason a child misses two weeks of school. That shift is slow, and it is built on trust more than on funding.
